First of all ;;
SAOR is not a Bleach roleplay. SAOR is a superhero roleplay set in the world of Bleach. What this means is that the average character will only interact with things from the Bleach world; you might fight a Hollow or meet a Shinigami, but you don't get a zanpakuto. Not unless you have some sort of freaky spirit sword power, anyway.
Now, just so we're clear, an "average character" is defined here as being either a human or an anomaly. Background characters are a little different, but we'll address that if there is sufficient demand for it.
So why did we decide to do it this way? Because the original idea was a superhero roleplay. The only problem was, almost all of those are based on comic books or movies. They might be unique, but you generally know where the plot is going, one way or another, because there's only so much you can do with humans and superhumans. With a third party involved, the Shinigami, and with the dynamics of reiatsu in Bleach, we can do a lot more.
Furthermore, SAOR only follows the Bleach canon from season one through season two. After the events of season two, we diverge from the canon. Why? Because the canon of Bleach is largely irrelevant to the events of SAOR and, more importantly, we want everyone to be able to join in—not just Bleach fans! Things were much simpler in seasons 1 and 2, which makes explanation to newcomers easier. Additionally, if newbies want to go and watch the show themselves, they only have to watch about sixty episodes instead of 550. XD
Reiatsu
Everything from Bleach which appears at SAOR is composed of reiatsu. This includes Hollows, zanpakuto, ghosts, Shinigami themselves, and all the tools a Shinigami uses. Reiatsu is essentially reiatsu and spirit matter. All creatures, whether spirits or humans, have reiatsu—because it is what their souls are made of. The amount of reiatsu a soul can have is unlimited, and each soul has a different "base level" of reiatsu. Humans have the weakest reiatsu—so little that they cannot sense or interact with reiatsu beings, such as Hollows, ghosts, or Shinigami. Many things can influence a person's reiatsu; willpower, for example, surviving an attack by a Hollow, the meteorite at the bottom of the lake, and, most commonly and most powerfully, exposure to powerful reiatsu from reiatsu beings. If a human were being shadowed by a Shinigami, for example, or living in a haunted house, their own reiatsu would increase. Reiatsu beings can control their "output" levels with regard to their reiatsu, while humans and anomalies cannot. If a reiatsu being with low reiatsu is subjected to a high reiatsu output all at once, they are paralyzed until their own reiatsu can compensate (usually impossible within that timeframe) or until the other being restricts their output. Depending on their abilities, Anomalies may be affected or may be immune to this effect.
If a human's reiatsu levels become abnormal, they become Anomalies and develop superhuman abilities. All Anomalies can sense and interact with reiatsu beings, and are subject to all or most of the "rules" regarding reiatsu.
There is no difference between the energy and matter forms of reiatsu; they are the same thing, and can take any form, at the will of anyone with the ability to control it.

Description
Applications
Shinigami applications are closed at this time. They will become available only as the plot dictates or at admin discretion, and applicants will be very carefully selected due to the fact that these characters are severely limited and often hugely influence the plot. Should a position or two come open, it will not be on a first-come-first-serve basis; rather, there will be a limited time in which members can apply for the positions and the application(s) which GenericWizard and I feel are the best will be accepted. The rest become background characters, and background characters have the potential to become full-fledged characters at a later date. Bleach canons may only be submitted if they are listed as being adoptable in an announcement of open Shinigami positions.
